Tapas For Takeout? 4 Great Choices

Blog

If you're going to order Spanish food takeout, then you'd do well to order tapas. These nibbling foods are meant to be shared among the group, often alongside plenty of red wine, or vino tinto as it is known in Spain. But not every tapa holds up well to the challenges of takeout. Fried foods like croquetas, for instance, will get soggy in a takeout container. Here are a few tapas that do well as takeout.

Gildas

Gildas are a simple tapa made from anchovies, marinated peppers, and olives. These ingredients are arranged on a skewer and mean to be eaten together in one bite. Since the dish is already served cold or at room temperature, you do not have to worry about it getting cold as it travels to your home as takeout. Some restaurants serve their gildas on top of sliced bread, which will typically be packaged separately when you order takeout. You can put the gilda on a slice of bread right before eating it, so the bread will not get soggy.

Boquerones

This is another dish that can be eaten cold or at room temperature, so it handles the challenges of takeout very well. Boquerones are anchovies that have been marinated in vinegar, garlic, oil, and sometimes other seasonings. They are salty little bites that are often a really nice contrast to a fruity wine or some sliced fruit.

Chorizo a la Sidra

Sidra is cider, and cider is very popular in Spain — especially in the Andalusia region where this dish is from. It consists of chorizo, a type of spicy sausage, that is simmered in cider for a unique sweetness. If you order chorizo a la sidra as takeout, you will probably get a bowl or pot filled with sliced chorizo in a cider-based liquid. The pieces of sausage are perfect for eating on a toothpick or with your fingers.

Tortilla Espanola

One of the most popular tapas of all time, tortilla espanola is an omelet-like dish that consists of eggs and potatoes, sometimes with other ingredients. It is baked in a pie pan-like dish and sliced into wedges. It's more filling than some of the other tapas on this list and could certainly make for a small meal in and of itself. It's packaged hot and may cool to room temperature by the time you get it home to eat, but it's delicious even at room temperature.

Whether you order gilda, some tortilla espanola, or an assortment of these dishes, you're sure to enjoy your Spanish takeout.
